Halloween makeup should be dramatic. Your ingredient list doesn't need to be. And honestly after our checks some of the ingredient lists were scarier than the local haunted house. So if you're looking for a scary face for Halloween night but want to avoid one on a permanent basis then you've come to the right place.
All the below Halloween makeup suggestions pass our ingredient checks. Rest assured microplastics, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, parabens and all the other nasty demons hiding in makeup products have been well and truly exorcised.
Black lips, gothic eyes, ghostly skin and even some clean face paint are all listed below.
🧛 What kind of Halloween are you having?
🖤 The Classic Goth
Black lip + smoky kohl + dark eyeshadow + pale base. Timeless. Committed. No explanation required.
🧛 The Vampire
Deep purple lip + metallic purple eye + seriously black lashes. Drama, but make it elegant.
✨ The Y3K Witch
Chrome lid + graphic liner + cool-toned purple lip + pale skin. Gothic meets editorial. See our Y3K guide for the full look.
🕯️ The "I Have 20 Minutes" Witch
Black lipstick + mascara + eyeliner. Done. Go to the party.
🖤 Lips — Go Full Goth
A dark lip is the single fastest Halloween transformation. Two directions: properly black if you're fully committed, deep purple if you'd like to be able to wear it in November too without people asking if you're alright.
e.l.f. O Face Satin Lipstick — All Night (Black)
For: Full goth commitment.
If you're going to wear black lipstick on Halloween, you may as well wear black lipstick. This is properly black — not "very dark burgundy if you squint" — with a satin finish that makes it considerably more comfortable than a super-dry matte. It stays put, it photographs well, and it passed our ingredient checks. Cruelty-free and vegan too.
Mrs Makeup verdict: Dramatic enough for Halloween, wearable enough that it doesn't have to disappear into a drawer on November 1st.
e.l.f. O Face Satin Lipstick — Untamed (Dark Purple)
For: Vampire energy with a slightly more social future.
Same formula as All Night, in a deep cool purple that reads as gothic without quite crossing into full theatrical territory. Which means you can also wear it to dinner in November and simply look like someone with excellent taste in lipstick. The Smolder shade is worth a look too if you want something that sits between purple and black — all shades are available on the same listing.
👁️ Liner — Make It Sharp
Most Halloween looks live or die on the liner. A smudged kohl for smoky gothic drama, a sharp liquid line for anything graphic and precise. Ideally both — they do very different things and work brilliantly together.
e.l.f. Smoky Kohl Eyeliner
For: Smoky, smudged, gothic eyes that look deliberately undone.
Creamy, blendable kohl that smudges exactly how you want it to for a gothic Halloween eye. Apply along the lash line, blend outward with a fingertip — the softer the edge, the more dramatic it reads. Then, crucially, press a dark eyeshadow straight over the top to stop it migrating. Skip that step and it will be on your cheekbones within the hour.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
For: A sharp line that stays exactly where you put it.
When you need precision — a graphic flick, a sharp cat eye, a clean upper lid line that's still intact at midnight — this is the one. Fine felt tip, quick-dry, waterproof. Pairs perfectly with the kohl: Stila on top for definition, kohl smudged underneath for depth.
🌑 Eyeshadow — Bring on the Darkness
Two jobs for eyeshadow at Halloween: setting the kohl so it doesn't end up on your chin, and building the kind of hollow socket depth that makes a look properly gothic rather than just heavily lined. Plus one for the chrome crowd.
Wet n Wild Color Icon 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette — Lights Off
For: Full dark eye, ten shades, €3.02. Yes really.
Ten dark shades — blacks, charcoals, deep greys — in a palette built for exactly this kind of look. The budget hero of this entire guide. Press the deepest black over your kohl liner to lock it in place, build into the socket for depth, and you'll still have nine other shades left over. We checked the ingredients. It passed.
e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow — Supernova (Purple)
For: Chrome, editorial, Y3K-gothic. Not your average Halloween eye.
A deep purple-violet liquid metallic that pairs directly with the Untamed lip. Tap onto the lid with a fingertip — don't swipe — and it dries to a chrome finish that holds without creasing. This is the pick for the Y3K Witch look above: Supernova on the lid, Smoky Kohl underneath, Untamed on the lip. See our Y3K makeup guide for the full breakdown.
🧛 Foundation — Pale, But Make It Pretty
There is a significant difference between a pale foundation and a Halloween-shop white foundation. One looks like skin, just cooler and lighter. The other looks like you've been got at by a makeup artist working on a budget of €3. Both picks below are proper formulas — go a shade lighter than usual and you have a convincingly ghostly base that still looks like an actual face.
NYX Total Control Pro Drop Foundation — Porcelain
For: Properly pale skin without the panto finish.
Lightweight, buildable, and the Porcelain shade gives genuine pallor without tipping grey or chalky. It reads as cool and pale rather than flat — which is exactly what you want when you're going for vampire rather than ceiling. Holds well through a long night, ingredient-checked, no concerns.
Essence Stay All Day 16H Long-Lasting Foundation
For: Under €5 and prepared to survive Halloween. Honestly, respect.
16 hours of wear, under €5, holds without separating through a long night. Pick a shade one step lighter than your usual match for the pale base effect — at this price, buying a separate Halloween shade is zero commitment. It'll spend November sitting in a drawer doing nothing, and you won't mind in the slightest.
🕷️ Mascara — Because Lashes Still Matter
No gothic Halloween eye is complete without proper lashes. One easy-wear option for a civilised indoor Halloween, one waterproof for the rest of us.
Rimmel Kind + Free Volume & Length Mascara — Black
For: Big black lashes without the ingredient compromise.
Rimmel's clean beauty line, and the standout product in it. Short ingredient list, no fragrance, builds volume and length and actually stays there. Simple, effective, and one of the best mascara options we've found at this price for anyone who cares about what's going near their eyes.
Catrice Glam & Doll Volume Waterproof Mascara
Going outside? In Ireland? In October? Waterproof mascara isn't really optional.
No parabens, no fragrance, vegan and PETA certified, holds through a full night without flaking. At €4.40 it's easy to justify as a dedicated Halloween mascara even if you already own one — and if you're spending any time outdoors in late October, the waterproof formula is not optional, it's just sense.
🎭 Face Paint — Proceed With Caution
And now we arrive at the slightly terrifying bit.
Face paint is where Halloween ingredient quality falls off a cliff. The pots of white and black in costume shops, the Halloween-edition face sticks, the €2 palette promising full skull transformation — almost all of it is formulated with ingredient lists that would make your regular makeup look virtuous by comparison. Microplastics, synthetic dye blends, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. We checked a lot of them. Most failed.
Snazaroo was the one that didn't.
Snazaroo Classic Face & Body Paint — Black
For: Face paint that won't haunt you afterwards.
Water-based, easily washable, safe from age 3+ — Snazaroo is the face paint most Irish parents already know, and it earned its place here because it's the cleanest option we found after going through most of the alternatives. Nothing in the ingredient list that gives us serious concern, which puts it well ahead of most of what's out there in the Halloween face paint category. Worth noting it contains lanolin — so not vegan.
The Amazon UK listing carries a wider range of colours than the Irish listing, and ships to Ireland for free — worth a look if you need anything beyond black.
We went looking for clean face paint for Halloween. Snazaroo was the one that came out the other side.

Questions
Seasonal and costume makeup is produced to a lower standard than everyday cosmetics — limited shelf presence, cost-driven formulation, and lower consumer scrutiny all play a role. The most common issues we found: microplastic pigments (Nylon-12, polyethylene, PMMA), synthetic dye blends with flagged safety profiles, and preservative systems including formaldehyde releasers. Everything in this guide was checked against our ingredient system and carries no hard flags.
Snazaroo is rated for ages 3+ and is one of the cleaner face paint options we found — no hard flags in our assessment. It does contain some ingredients that may cause irritation on sensitive skin, so a patch test 24 hours before use is sensible, especially for young children. Not vegan — contains lanolin.
Press a dark eyeshadow directly over kohl immediately after blending — the powder locks the creamy formula in place and stops it migrating. The Wet n Wild Lights Off palette has exactly the right shades for this. For a sharp graphic line, the Stila Stay All Day is waterproof and needs no setting step at all.
Gothic Halloween with a chrome, editorial edge — cool purples instead of warm reds, metallic rather than glitter, graphic liner rather than smudged kohl. From this guide: e.l.f. Liquid Metallic Supernova on the lid, e.l.f. Smoky Kohl underneath, Untamed purple lip, pale base. See our Y3K makeup guide for the full breakdown.
Yes — the Beauty Assistant can check the ingredients of any product. Paste the ingredient list or ask by name and it will flag any concerns and suggest alternatives. Particularly useful if you already own a Halloween product and want to know what's actually in it before it goes anywhere near your face.
