Walk into any Irish pharmacy or open any beauty retailer and you’ll find shelves of products labelled “natural”, “organic”, “non-toxic”, and “clean”. None of those words have a legal definition in Ireland or the EU. Any brand can print them on any packaging regardless of what’s on the ingredient list.
We built Mrs Makeup because we were frustrated with exactly that. We defined our own ingredient standard and checked every product against it. When we reviewed products marketed as clean across Irish retail, fewer than one in ten passed.

Irish weather puts foundations to the test. We look at long-wear formulas that hold up through humidity and rain — and pass our ingredient standard without the harsh chemicals.
No. Neither Irish law nor EU cosmetics regulation defines “clean” as a product category. The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009) sets safety requirements and restricts certain ingredients, but does not regulate use of the word “clean” on packaging. Any brand can print it freely with no verification required. At Mrs Makeup we apply our own defined ingredient standard — every product in our database has been checked against it before it can be recommended.
Not as your only source. Many brands deliberately omit or truncate ingredient lists on Amazon listings to avoid triggering the ingredient filters shoppers use when avoiding certain chemicals. It’s a known workaround. The full INCI is often buried, missing entirely, or different from what’s printed on the physical product. We cross-reference every product against the brand’s own EU product page and independent ingredient databases before it enters our database.
A hard-flagged ingredient means the product does not make it into our database — full stop. Hard flags include parabens (propylparaben and butylparaben across all categories; methylparaben and ethylparaben in makeup and skincare), PFAS, microplastics, formaldehyde releasers, D4 cyclotetrasiloxane (EU banned), phthalates, and MIT/MCI. A soft-flagged ingredient is one that’s fine for most people but worth knowing about — fragrance allergens, D5/D6 silicones, alcohol denat, and others. Products with only soft flags can still be recommended, with the flags surfaced so you can decide.
Fragrance — by a significant margin. Synthetic fragrance (listed as “parfum” or “fragrance” on the INCI) is the leading cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis. It appears in the majority of makeup products sold in Ireland, including many that carry sensitive skin claims on the label. “Hypoallergenic” has no regulated definition under EU law — a product can carry that label and still contain synthetic fragrance. “Fragrance-free” is the only reliable indicator for reactive skin.
It tells you two specific ingredients are not in the formula — and nothing more. “Free from” marketing is one of the most common greenwashing patterns in the industry. A product can be genuinely free from parabens and sulphates while still containing PFAS, microplastics, formaldehyde releasers, or a heavy synthetic fragrance load. Removing two ingredients shoppers recognise as concerns while leaving everything else untouched is not a clean formula. It’s selective marketing.
