Most makeup marketed as natural, organic, or non-toxic in Ireland hasn't been checked by anyone. We've vetted over 1,300 products against a defined ingredient standard — with new products added to the database every week. What we found in "clean" products was not reassuring.
Words like "natural", "pure", "botanical", and "gentle" carry no legal weight in cosmetics. We found product after product marketed as clean that failed our ingredient standard on inspection. The front of the packaging and the ingredient list on the back were telling entirely different stories.

A mascara can give great lash volume and contain carbon black. A foundation can look flawless and be full of parabens. Reviews do not tell you that.

At Mrs Makeup we define it ourselves: products that contain none of our hard-flagged ingredients, including parabens, PFAS, cyclosiloxanes, microplastics, carbon black, formaldehyde releasers, phthalates, oxybenzone, and hydroquinone. Every product in our database has been checked against this standard before being added.
Yes. Some parabens are restricted under EU cosmetics regulation — propylparaben and butylparaben are banned in leave-on products for children under three — but methylparaben and ethylparaben remain widely used in mainstream makeup. They appear in foundations, mascaras, and concealers across all price points. Our standard excludes all parabens regardless of type or concentration.
Carbon black (CI 77266) is a petroleum-derived black pigment used in mascaras and eyeliners for its intense, long-lasting colour. It is classified as a Group 2B possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It appears in a large proportion of mascaras — including many marketed as natural or organic. Our database excludes all products containing carbon black and recommends iron oxide-based alternatives instead.
No — neither term has a regulated definition in EU cosmetics law. Hypoallergenic, natural, pure, clean, and non-toxic can all be printed on packaging without meeting any verified standard. We found products labelled hypoallergenic that contained synthetic fragrance — one of the leading causes of cosmetic contact dermatitis. The only reliable check is reading the full INCI ingredient list, which is what our database does for every product it recommends.
No — and in our experience building the database, often the opposite. Some of the most concerning ingredient lists we reviewed belonged to well-known premium brands. Price reflects marketing, packaging, and brand positioning — not ingredient quality. Several of the cleanest products in our database are at budget or mid-range price points.
