What "Clean Makeup" Should Mean
When most people search for clean makeup in Ireland, they are looking for products that are free from ingredients linked to health concerns — hormone disruption, carcinogenic potential, accumulation in the body over time. They are not looking for products that simply have green packaging or botanical ingredients on the front label.

Why Clean Makeup Claims Cannot Be Trusted at Face Value
When we started building the Mrs Makeup database we reviewed hundreds of products marketed as clean, natural, or non-toxic. What we found consistently was a significant gap between the front-of-pack marketing and the ingredient list on the back. Products with "clean beauty" prominently displayed on the label regularly contained parabens, cyclosiloxanes, or synthetic fragrance compounds associated with sensitisation.
This is not accidental. Greenwashing — the use of environmental or health-adjacent language to imply cleaner credentials than the formula actually has — is widespread in the cosmetics industry. The word "clean" costs nothing to print. Reformulating a product to remove problematic ingredients costs considerably more. Many brands choose the former.
The most reliable signal that a brand takes clean seriously is full ingredient list transparency — publishing a complete INCI list for every product, keeping it updated when formulas change, and making it easy to find. Brands that make their ingredient lists difficult to locate are usually doing so for a reason.
Clean Makeup in Ireland — What Is Available
The Irish market has improved significantly in terms of clean makeup availability over the past several years. Brands with strong ingredient credentials — INIKA Organic, Physicians Formula Organic Wear, Madara, and a growing number of independent brands — are now stocked or easily ordered into Ireland. Budget-friendly clean options have also expanded, with some drugstore lines now offering products that pass a meaningful ingredient review.

No. Neither Irish law nor EU cosmetics regulation defines "clean" as a product category. The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC 1223/2009) sets safety requirements and restricts or bans certain ingredients, but does not regulate the use of the word "clean" on packaging. Any brand can use it freely.
No — and in our experience, often the opposite. Premium price does not correlate with cleaner ingredients. Some of the worst ingredient lists we reviewed during our database build belonged to well-known luxury brands. Budget and mid-range products regularly outperform premium ones on our standard.
